Modern Renaissance

I named this mixed media artwork Modern Renaissance due to its similar nature to some of the more manneristic Renaissance artworks I've seen. During that time period, there were a multitude of paintings created containing crowds of people. Each figure is often painstakingly rendered to do something different. They look to the side, talk to someone, or are caught in a moment of mid-action. These artworks always give plenty for the viewer to look at, plenty for their eyes to examine without getting bored. I wanted to emulate that here, but with a more modern take. Instead of painted figures, I used found photos that I felt were eye-catching in their own way.
Initially, this piece was not meant to have cracked glass across it. A large piece of the glass had been broken off at one corner. Dejected and fatigued from working on it, the artwork sat covered in a closet until I could come back with a renewed sense of motivation. That motivation was kicked off with the question, "What if I cracked it more?" The result, I find, makes it all the more interesting. There are two spots, one at the top center and one near the bottom right, where the glass shattered so completely that it had to be removed. Those bare spots leave a woman and a man to the air, their gaze's almost looking at one another between the fractures.
This work was made almost entirely with found objects. The photos, hand-selected and trimmed with care, came from old photography books found in a used bookstore. The frame with glass, formerly housing a mass-produced Monet-esque print, was rescued from storage at a relative's home. Black paint and two forms of glue were used to adhere it all together.
